Innovis Aberdale crossbred ewes: Robust and productive

Innovis Aberdale crossbred ewes offer commercial lamb producers the opportunity to maintain or increase production outputs from prolific ewes that are smaller and hardier and capable of rearing twins off grass.

Aberdale crossbred ewes offer you:

  • A lambing percentage of 180-200% from a relatively low cost base with no requirement for flushing
  • The ability to lamb outdoors without assistance, to mother twins with a plentiful supply of milk.
  • Fast growth rates in lambs off grass - achieving 19kg carcasses in the top carcass specification and yield
  • Robustness – better able to withstand disease (reducing the need for treatment) and to achieve at least 5 lambing within the flock.

Derived from a Texel based nucleus flock which lambs outdoors, the Aberdale crossbred is a well-conformed ewe that is particularly well suited to lambing outside on low input grass based systems.

No flushing – added benefits from the better use of autumn grazing

Aberdale crossbred ewes carry InverdaleTM – a gene which means that they are naturally highly prolific and so they need to have restricted grass intake in the run up to tupping - “non-flushing”. This means that autumn grass can be made available for other stock groups on the farm such as finishing lambs, extending cattle grazing or shutting fields off for using as deferred grazing later in the winter – offering opportunities to increase income or reduce the need for bought-in conserved forage. Our Greenprint® package can help you to make the most of your autumn grass and forage.

Meeting retail requirements

Finished lambs from Aberdale crossbred ewes have been shown to finish faster and achieve the top grades for carcass specification and meat yield.

Innovis can also supply Terminal sires for use with Aberdale crossbred ewes – these are carefully selected for optimal growth and conformation to enhance your finished lamb production.

Quality and traceability

Aberdale crossbred ewe lambs are reared on contract to specified target criteria and we try to match your requirements for size and type with ewe lambs from one or two of our dedicated producers. Health audits also enable us to match the health profile of your commercial flock with that of your ewe lamb producer. We aim to establish a reliable and long-term supply of Aberdale ewe lambs from the same producer year on year.
